Upcoming Sessions
3 Day Still Life Oil Painting Workshop

Venue: Castle Hill Showgrounds, Castle Hill
Date: 14th - 16th Aug 2026 from 10am to 2pm AEDT

This event is limited to a small number of attendees to ensure that everyone is given the attention needed. The indirect method of painting is a multi-step approach that allows you to develop the painting gradually. It also allows you to correct and modify your work as you progress. Oil paint is a very forgiving medium, and learning to use this method gives you many opportunities to create various effects in a painting. This method of painting allows you to develop detail in a painting and control various light effects. The course will be delivered over 3 sessions of 4.0 hours each. Throughout the whole course, we will be working on a single still-life painting containing different elements that need to be tackled using various techniques.

The schedule is as follows:
Day 1:
  • Overview of oil painting materials and tools.
  • Setting up the still life composition and selecting objects.
  • Basic drawing and composition techniques for still life.
  • Introduction to the colour palette and mixing.
  • Starting the underpainting and initial blocking of shapes and values.
Day 2:
  • Building the coloured layer.
  • Understanding light and shadow in still life.
  • Capturing texture and reflective surfaces.
Day 3:
  • Adding colour variations and subtleties to your still life.
  • Glazing and scumbling techniques.
  • Finalising your painting with highlights and finishing touches.
