Oil Painting Term Classes

The aim of this course is to teach you to paint with oils.

Discover the art of oil painting in our engaging and immersive painting classes in Sydney. No prior drawing experience is necessary, as we will guide you through the fundamentals and provide practice throughout the course.

These are ongoing painting classes with a blend of instruction, demonstrations and individual painting. This is a group class, so there will be demonstrations for everyone as well as individual tuition. Over the first 7 weeks you will learn the basic painting skills, paint application and colour mixing. There are the foundations on which you will continue to build up your skills.

Our class structure focuses on teaching you the techniques used by the old masters, as well as later impressionists and contemporary painters. The emphasis is on realism, enabling you to paint objects as they appear in the real world. Once you've mastered the foundational principles, you'll have the freedom to develop your own unique style in your paintings.

Here is an overview of what we will be covering.

Weeks 1 - 4
Course introduction, materials, and safety precautions.
Setting up your workspace and preparing your canvas.
Understanding oil paints, solvents, and mediums.
Basic colour theory and colour mixing, which will include preparing your own colour mixing charts.

Weeks 5 - 7
Methods of painting: direct and indirect
Still life using direct painting, matching colour, tone and paint application to paint simple objects.

Class size will be kept small, allowing each student to progress at their own pace. We believe in an incremental approach to skill development, introducing more challenging techniques as you master the previous ones.

We'll begin by discussing your objectives and needs, allowing us to give you tailored feedback and guidance throughout the course.

Advanced classes. Students who complete the first 7 sessions can continue to attend the classes. Initially they need to complete a number of small painting exercises to practice what they learned during their first session. If successful they can then get involved in more advanced painting skills as follows.

Setting up a still life composition.
Sketching and underpainting techniques.
Building layers and creating form.
Refining details and texture in still life.

Landscape Painting
Introduction to landscape composition.
Techniques for painting natural elements (sky, trees, water).
Capturing light and atmosphere in landscapes.
Creating depth and perspective in landscape paintings.

Portrait Painting
Basics of portrait anatomy and proportions.
Underpainting and blocking in facial features.
Skin tones and capturing a likeness.
Finalizing details and textures in portraits.

Advanced Techniques
Glazing and layering techniques.
Impasto and texture in oil painting.

MATERIALS NEEDED
For the first session I will provide to you with all the materials that you need. We will then discuss your objectives and needs and I will be able to give you an informed feedback about what you will need to buy. I always suggest that if you want to progress in this skill you will also need to do a lot of practice on your own.
