This course is aimed for those individuals that want to learn how to paint landscapes in oils and/or acrylics
Understanding the foundations of drawing and painting with oils. Topics covered include
Knowing your tools and materials including health/safety.
Understanding colour, tonal values, saturation and how to mix colours
Painting composition
Painting simple elements from the landscape such as trees, mountains, water etc.
Landscape painting, covering topics which include composition, perspective and how to capture natural light using paint and colour. There might be a small number of sessions that will be out-doors.
Prerequisites In order to be able to attend and to progress in this class you will need to have some prior experience in drawing or painting. If not, we will need to do some initial training in basic drawing.
Class structure
The course will be divided into a number of sessions during which we will tackle various topics in landscape painting. Subjects covered are in the following list. Progress will vary and depends on the individual. We will cover a number of core topics related to technique and fundamentals. Once you master these then you can progress to more difficult aspects. Core fundamental technical subjects include:
Color and color mixing practice using a limited palette. We will cover the properties of color and how to control tonal value and saturation.
Seeing and mixing color
Seeing Light and shadow using life objects
Basic drawing/sketching important for painting: linear and aerial perspective
Seeing line and shape to create painting composition
Direct and Indirect painting methods
Landscape painting:
Skies including clouds
Mixing greens. Creating a landscape with variations of greens.
Trees
Terrain
Water
Painting from photography
Painting using limited palette
A deposit is required from individuals committing themselves to the class.
Classes can be cancelled if numbers are not reached. In case class is cancelled the deposit will either be refunded or transferred to other sessions.
MATERIALS NEEDED For the first session I will provide to you with all the materials that you need. A material list will be given on first session. You will need the following artist grade paints: titanium white, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, permanent alizarin, vermillion, cadmium yellow light (pale), lemon yellow, phthalo green, burnt sienna, yellow ochre. Buying own material is an additional cost to the course fee.
